How to determine what you did wrong in a wreck?

I'm sixteen and have not even had my license for like six months.

I already got in a wreck, that was my fault.

But that's the thing, I don't think I did anything wrong. My parents keep saying that it makes them uneasy to let me keep driving since I won't admit to doing anything wrong so I won't change my driving habits and it would happen again.

I wasn't speeding, my music wasn't too loud, I wasn't messing with the radio, I wasn't looking in the mirror, I wasn't texting, I wasn't tailgating anyone, I wasn't doing anything!

It was raining out and I was going from my mom's too my dad's. I was right down the street from my mom's and I remember saying to myself "Drive ten below the speed limit because the rain..." and I was doing that! Then I got near this little town square thingy and these guys were parallel parking, but they were backing in. I hit the brakes to slow down, but nothing happened... so my car just slid into the back of their car. My car isn't that messed up but their car has over $900 worth of damage, but the dealer they're going to is fixing part of it for free. They didn't call the police because my step-dad came down and talked them out of it, because other wise I would have gotten a ticket and my license would have been suspended.

So I got off really lucky. Not to mention, my parents aren't making me get a job to pay it off myself. I offered, but they told me to focus on school. So then I offered to give up my Christmas and they said it was okay they would take care of it. I feel bad!

I just don't know why I should admit to doing anything wrong if I don't think I was doing anything wrong... I don't know if my brakes locked or if I hydroplaned, or what, but my car did not stop when I clearly hit the brakes. My dad thinks it might be because I have bad judgement of distance because I'm legally blind and can't drive without my glasses (I was wearing them, though!!), but I might need to get my prescription updated since it's been a few years.

I don't know! I just hate this whole thing because I feel horrible and it's Christmas time and my parents are already having money issues and they have to pay for this and I practically just got my license. If I were them, I would have taken away my car. But they didn't. They actually didn't change the rules at all. I guess they just really trust me.

Wahh. This whole thing is just annoying because I really feel bad but I don't think I did anything wrong. How do I prevent it from happening again if I feel like it was out of my control?|||It was an accident, pure and simple. Sometimes even the most careful of drivers has a collision. It's just something that happens. You're not a bad driver, if that's what you're thinking. It's possible you hydroplaned, and the only thing that could have prevented you from hitting the car is slowing down a lot earlier.

There's something you can do in the future to avoid such a thing, it's called 'foresight' - remember to be aware of all kinds of road hazards, and anticipate things before they happen. Not easy, but it gets easier with experience.|||I don't know either, since by reading it is clear is was your fault. 10 miles under the speed limit obviously was not enough, as evidenced by you losing control when braking. Your brakes didn't lock, you merely stepped too hard and skidded. Yes, if the police had been there you would have been given a ticket for driving too fast for conditions, and not having control of your vehicle.

That is what you did wrong, instead of looking here for someone to tell you you aren't at fault, just admit you were.

"How do I prevent it from happening again if I feel like it was out of my control?" By realizing it was not out of your control. No one made you drive too fast for conditions, it was your choice to do so. Next time slow down in rain.|||1. First, get the brakes checked; see if they were working properly.

2. One thing that you did wrong was to hit and hold the brakes in the rain. That works in dry weather and in cars with ABS. In the rain in a car without ABS, you need to pump the brakes.|||My father used to do this (when I was 9 years old) Tell your parents to take you to a large parking lot or someplace and let you practice avoiding road cones and stuff, that will help your reflexes and let them know you are serious about becoming a better driver.
