1 Our natural tendency is to concentrate on what is going on ahead of where we are going, so you need to check your mirrors__________.
before you answer your cell phone
whenever you change speed or position
unless you are the only car on the road
if visibility is poor
2 Create a following distance greater than 3 seconds ahead when __________.
you are not in a hurry
there is no traffic on the road
you are traveling in front of a motorcycle
a driver behind you is trying to pass
3 Rear-end crashes are the most common type of collisions because ______ .
drivers are exceeding the speed limit
drivers follow too closely behind the vehicle ahead
it is difficult to see and brake when backing
vehicles ahead are traveling faster than the posted speed limit
4 You should search a minimum of__________seconds ahead of your vehicle to avoid obstacles in your path.
10
15
60
30
5 If you drive an SUV or RV, you need to be worried about clearance when driving __________.
in parking lots
in parking garages
in driveways
in school zones
6 New hand positions are encouraged on the steering wheel such as __________.
6 and 10 o'clock
12 and 6 o'clock
11 and 3 o'clock
8 and 4 o'clock
7 You can reduce your vehicle's blind spot by_______.
installing oblique mirrors
installing large side mirrors
installing flat mirrors
installing dynamic mirrors
8 The speed posted on a sign that warns you of a curve ahead,________.
is the safe speed to travel in ideal conditions
is a speed you can exceed if you have control of your vehicle
is faster than the speed limit
is a speed that you should drive if the road is slippery
9 High speed increases the risk of collision because of ALL of these things EXCEPT:
traction and maneuverability are reduced
inertia is increased and it takes the brakes longer to stop the vehicle
visibility is increased
the force of impact is greater
10 How can you assess whether you are not looking far enough ahead when you drive?
You make frequent, quick stops.
A 35-second visual lead is not enough.
You can never find the street where you need to turn.
You find yourself distracted by other drivers.|||3. I am not sure that rear-end crashes are the most common type.
For 2009, FARS lists 1344 stopped in traffic lane, 553 slowing, 5873 negotiating a curve
and 31260 going straight, 128 backing up.
8. In practice, you can usually safely go faster than the advisory in a passenger car in good conditions. Probably not in a large truck. But for the purposes of a test, the first answer is best
9. risk = probability of collision multiplied by consequences (e.g. cost of repair/medical bills), so as a higher force of impact increases the damage, it does increase the risk (though not the chance of collision)
Traction is not significantly reduced at high speed, except in the wet where there is a possibility of hydroplaning. Visibility is not increased. Momentum is increased and it does take longer to stop.
Inertia is proportional to the car's mass and remains constant.
Maneuverability ? There is no apparent effect on the ability to change lanes, to steer around other vehicles, or to decelerate. There is a limit on how small a radius of curve you can negotiate, though, which I guess qualifies.
